Using White Balance (WB) setting to achieve the best sunrise and sunset images. Select Daylight (typically represented by the sun icon) from your camera’s “White Balance” menu. The Daylight WB setting deciphers the colors of the particular light the scene is bathed in. For sunrise and sunset images, that light happens to be the sun: The Daylight setting adjusts the camera’s white balance for sunlight and records the sunrise or sunset colors accurately. If your camera has a Sunrise/Sunset mode, that mode changes the setting to Daylight WB for this reason. Automatic white balance mode (AWB), the default mode on most cameras, attempts to render the subtle colors of a sunrise or sunset as white light. This is what it does when you take a picture indoors near regular light bulbs. Even though AWB works well to change that light bulb light to normal-looking white light, it also removes the beautiful, desirable colors of a sunrise or sunset. Depending on the situation, you may notice a yellow cast in your images if you use AWB. This is why setting your camera’s WB to Daylight renders the best overall color in a sunrise or sunset image.
